This site brings together my various publications in Scots language, most of them published with bairns in mind. As well as information on my backlist of titles, it includes news and previews of my latest books and projects.
Several of my books which were published by Itchy Coo (of which I was a co-founder) are now out of print. I am often asked for copies, so I am republishing the texts on this website, and also the original Teachers’ Notes which I wrote to accompany them. I will also be uploading some poems and stories which I wrote for that project but which were not published at the time.
I have run a number of workshops in schools based on my Scots language books, and have appeared at the Edinburgh Book Festival, Wee Write Book Festival, Book Week Scotland and Big DoG Children’s Book Festival. Two of my Tintin translations were selected to be part of the First Minister’s Reading Challenge in 2016.
I also write children’s dictionaries in English, including the bestselling Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary and Oxford Roald Dahl Thesaurus. See my Amazon Author page or my profile page on the Scottish Book Trust website for more information.
For my academic work and research on the history of Scots and lexicography, see my separate websites on Jamieson’s Dictionary of Scots and Boswell’s Dictionary of the Scots Language. I also run the ScotLex website which includes information on my past research projects: the digitisation of the Dictionary of the Scots Language and the Historical Thesaurus of Scots.
My book on Jamieson’s Dictionary, published by OUP, was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Research Book Award in 2012. More information is available here: Jamieson’s Dictionary of Scots: the Story of the First Historical Dictionary of the Scots Language.
