*NEW Read ‘Translating the 12 Days o Yule‘ in the Books From Scotland Christmas Issue *
On the 1st day o Yuletide,
My true luve gied tae me
A reid robin in a rowan tree.
The 12 Days o Yule is a Scots version of the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ – but it is not a straight translation from English into Scots. There are no lords, ladies or milking-maids! Instead, there are skaters skooshin, hoolets hootin and sheep a-shooglin – along with a reid robin in a rowan tree.
* Note: Read about earlier Scottish versions of the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ here.*
I am donating all my proceeds from this book to Breast Cancer Now Scotland, and the book itself is dedicated to the wonderful staff of the Breast Unit at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital, especially the incomparable Professor Mike Dixon.
